The Girl From the 23rd Century

Sand Angel - Clock on a beach

The Girl With No Shoes is a time-travel thriller, with a dash of complicated romance thrown in. After all, being from the future tends to be problematic in a primitive century like ours. I wasn’t too sure how to categorize this novel. It’s sci-fi, but without the geekiness. I use the time travel device to put two people into a crazy predicament, and explore the complexities that might arise when you are finally forced to tell the person you love something you know they will find impossible… ‘Honey, you’re never going to believe this, but I’m from the future…yeah, really…’.

It was a fun diversion for me to write, being a mash-up of romance with sci-fi. I had some fun with the romantic angle, considering the predicament being from the future might put you in.

What do you do when the most important thing about you is something no one could ever believe?

Here is the catchy description I wrote for Amazon:

There’s a new girl in town, and when she takes up residence in the beach house next to Jake he’s immediately interested. Octavia is beautiful, intelligent and speaks with an exotic accent that no one can quite place. But what Jake or anyone else in this sleepy little beach town could never
suspect is that Octavia is from the distant future. And she’s here on a mission.

Jake is a widower with a precocious 10 year old daughter. Octavia never knew what having a family meant, having been raised in the eugenics farms of the future. Octavia hopes to fit into 21st century society and carry out her mission in secret, but falling in love is definitely outside
mission parameters.

As their romance grows Octavia is torn between her mission and the people she loves, and Jake begins to suspect Octavia is carrying some dark secret she isn’t telling him. But for the first time in her life she feels like she’s part of a family and she isn’t ready to give that up. It’s not long before Octavia is forced to make some terrible choices and she yearns to tell Jake the truth – but how can he ever believe it?
